About Western Samar
Catbalogan is the capital of Samar province, historically known as Western Samar, in the Philippines' Eastern Visayas region. It sits on the western coast of Samar Island, facing Maqueda Bay, and combines its role as the province's administrative and commercial center with a strong coastal identity built around fishing and trade.
Founded in October 1596 by Spanish Jesuit missionaries, Catbalogan became the capital of the entire island of Samar in 1768. After the island was divided into three provinces in 1965, Catbalogan remained the capital of Western Samar, which was renamed Samar in 1969. It gained cityhood in 2007, and its colonial and civic past is still visible around the center.
Landmarks such as Saint Bartholomew the Apostle Church, first built as a stone church in 1616 and rebuilt after a 1969 fire, and the 1930s neoclassical Samar Provincial Capitol anchor the downtown area. Nearby, the City Plaza, the Rizal monument and a stone obelisk near the capitol tell the story of Samar's history, while the baywalk and Buri Island, linked to the city by a land bridge, offer waterfront views and outdoor escapes.
As a coastal city, Catbalogan is known for its fresh seafood, including shells and crustaceans from Maqueda Bay. Every August, the Manaragat Festival honors the local fishermen with street dancing, marine-life costumes, boat parades and seafood celebrations, giving visitors a lively look at the city's culture.
Catbalogan also functions as a transport and trade stopover between Luzon and Mindanao, with bus and ferry connections through Samar and Leyte. Its government offices, markets, seaport and growing hospitality scene make it a practical base for business travel, while the bay, festivals and nearby coastal landscapes attract leisure visitors.

Western Samar Travel Guide

How to Get Around
Tricycles are the main way to move around the city and reach nearby barangays, while jeepneys, multicabs and buses connect Catbalogan with Calbayog, Tacloban and other towns. The compact downtown around City Plaza and the port is easy to explore on foot.
Where to Stay
Most hotels and inns are clustered in the downtown and poblacion area, close to the City Plaza, capitol, markets and restaurants. Staying near the seaport is convenient for early ferry departures and onward travel.
