About Surigao del Sur
Surigao del Sur is a Pacific-coast province in the Caraga region of northeastern Mindanao, known for its wild coastline, deep-blue spring rivers, wide waterfalls and surf breaks. Its laid-back capital, Tandag, sits along the coast, while smaller towns and islets give the province a relaxed, nature-first character.
The province was created in 1960 when the old Surigao province was divided into Surigao del Norte and Surigao del Sur. Fishing, coconut farming and mining remain part of daily life, and indigenous Manobo and Kamayo communities add to the area's cultural variety.
Among the most visited places are the Hinatuan Enchanted River, the multi-tiered Tinuy-an Falls in Bislig, and the white-sand islets of Britania Islands off San Agustin. Lanuza and Cantilan attract surfers, while Cagwait and Lianga offer quieter beaches and coastal villages.
Tandag and Bislig are the province's two cities and serve as practical bases for hotels, restaurants and transport. Business travel is small-scale and focused on agriculture, fishing and public services, while eco-tourism is growing as visitors come for river trips, island-hopping and surfing.
Whether arriving for nature, coastal relaxation or small-town work, Surigao del Sur rewards travelers who accept slower overland journeys and appreciate one of Mindanao's less-crowded coastal destinations.

Where to Stay
Tandag and Bislig offer the widest choice of hotels, inns and budget lodgings, while Hinatuan has places near the Enchanted River. San Agustin and the Britania Islands area have beach resorts, and surf towns such as Lanuza and Cantilan provide homestays and simple guesthouses.
