About Sulu

Sulu is an island province in the southwestern Philippines, part of the Sulu Archipelago between Basilan and Tawi-Tawi. Its capital and main gateway is Jolo, a historic port town on Jolo Island, while the provincial seat of government is in neighbouring Patikul. The province is known for its Tausug culture, maritime traditions and the enduring legacy of the Sulu Sultanate.

The province was once the heart of the Sulu Sultanate, a powerful maritime kingdom whose influence reached across the southern Philippines and parts of Borneo. Reminders of this past remain in Jolo's old walled quarter, the Sulu Provincial Capitol and heritage sites such as Masjid Tulay, the largest mosque in the province, and the National Museum – Sulu.

Jolo town serves as the commercial and cultural centre, with its busy market, the Tulay Central Mosque, Jolo Cathedral and the compact historic Walled City. Beyond the capital, municipalities and islands such as Siasi, Parang, Maimbung and Panglima Sugala offer fishing communities, beaches, reefs and volcanic highlands including Bud Daho and Bud Tumantangis.

Tausug culture is visible in traditional weaving, kulintangan music, and dishes such as tiyula itum, a blackened beef soup, and piyanggang manok, grilled chicken in a burnt-coconut sauce, along with sweets like daral and lokot-lokot. Jolo's markets, cafés and small restaurants introduce visitors to these local flavours.

For travellers, Sulu offers cultural heritage, island scenery and marine life, though visits require careful planning because of security conditions and government travel advisories. Jolo also functions as the provincial centre for government, trade and services, making it relevant for official and business travel as well as cautious leisure exploration.
