About Lanao del Sur

Marawi, officially the Islamic City of Marawi, is the capital of Lanao del Sur and the province's only city. Set on the northern shore of Lake Lanao, it serves as the cultural, educational and religious centre of the Maranao people, whose language, Islamic traditions and crafts give the city a distinct identity within Mindanao.

The city's roots go back to the settlement of Dansalan, established in the 17th century and later developed as a lakeside trading port. It became a chartered city in 1940 and was renamed the Islamic City of Marawi in 1980. The 2017 siege by ISIL-linked groups devastated the city centre, and reconstruction of the Most Affected Area continues alongside day-to-day life in the rest of the city.

Maranao culture is visible throughout Marawi, from the Grand Mosque and Islamic Center to the sarimanok motifs, okir carvings and torogan royal-house tradition. Landmarks include the Aga Khan Museum of Islamic Arts, the Mindanao State University main campus, the Agus River and sweeping views over Lake Lanao.

The commercial Padian/Poblacion area, the university corridor and quieter lakeside barangays each offer different experiences. Visitors can browse local markets, sample Maranao food, meet artisans and observe daily life along the lake and mountain roads that connect Marawi with Iligan City.

Marawi is relevant to travellers interested in Mindanao's Islamic heritage and to professionals involved in the city's reconstruction, education and regional development. Road access via Iligan City or Laguindingan Airport makes it a focused but rewarding destination for both cultural visitors and business travel.

Lanao del Sur Travel Guide

Best Time to Visit

The dry season from December to May is generally the most practical time to visit Marawi, with drier roads and clearer views of Lake Lanao. The city's higher elevation keeps temperatures cooler than lowland Mindanao, while the wetter months from June to October can make travel slower.

How to Get Around

Tricycles and habal-habal motorcycle taxis are common for short trips around the city. Jeepneys and vans connect key areas, while renting a car or booking a private driver is a convenient way to reach Marawi from Iligan or Cagayan de Oro and explore nearby lakeside routes.

Where to Stay

Accommodation in Marawi remains limited but includes small hotels, transient houses and lodges near Mindanao State University and the city proper. Many visitors also base themselves in Iligan City, roughly 30 kilometres away, where there are more hotel options.

Food & Drink

Maranao cuisine is a highlight, with dishes such as piaparan, a chicken dish cooked with coconut and turmeric, kuning yellow rice, palapa spicy condiment and dodol sweets. Local cafés and eateries near MSU and the lakeside serve home-style meals, and the Grand Padian area offers market snacks and produce.
