About Eastern Visayas
Tacloban is the capital of Leyte and the regional center of Eastern Visayas in the Philippines. Set along the San Juanico Strait, it connects the islands of Leyte and Samar through the San Juanico Bridge, one of the country's most recognizable bridges.
The city grew from a fishing settlement known as Kankabatok, named after the bamboo 'taklub' traps used by local fishermen. During World War II, Tacloban briefly served as the capital of the Philippines after General Douglas MacArthur's landing in 1944, and that history remains visible at the nearby MacArthur Landing Memorial in Palo.
Key landmarks include the San Juanico Bridge, the Santo Niño Church and the Sto. Niño Shrine and Heritage Museum, which showcase the city's religious and political heritage. The annual Sangyaw Festival and the Pintados-Kasadyaan Festival of Festivals highlight the region's local culture and draw visitors each year.
As the commercial, education, and government hub of Eastern Visayas, Tacloban is home to regional offices, universities and busy markets. Downtown areas along Rizal Avenue and Burgos Street concentrate shops, restaurants and services, while the airport and seaport make the city the region's main transport gateway.
For leisure travellers, Tacloban offers history, festivals and a convenient base for exploring Leyte's coastal towns. Business travellers come for government work, trade and conferences, making the city a practical and resilient destination.
