About East Sepik
Wewak is the capital of East Sepik Province on Papua New Guinea's northern coast, where palm-lined beaches and green hills frame a small, laid-back provincial town. It is best known as the main gateway to the Sepik River, one of the world's great river systems, and to the province's distinctive carving and cultural traditions.
Wewak's history is strongly shaped by World War II, when it was the site of a major Japanese airbase on mainland New Guinea. At Cape Wom, just west of town, Lieutenant General Adachi signed the formal surrender of Japanese forces in New Guinea on 13 September 1945. War relics, tunnels, a Japanese peace park and memorials on Mission Hill remain part of the town's landscape today.
The town centre clusters around its market, shops, wharf and government offices, while the Boram area east of town holds the airport and several hotels. Cape Wom Memorial Park and Wom Beach are popular local sights, and nearby islands such as Mushu, Kairiru, Yuo and Karasau offer short boat trips, fishing and snorkelling. Roads link Wewak with Sepik River villages including Angoram, Timbunke and Pagwi.
As a provincial capital, Wewak is a hub for administration, trade, health services and small business. Its markets sell fresh fish, tropical fruit, sago and local produce, alongside Sepik carvings and crafts, while hotels and guesthouses provide a modest base for visitors.
For travellers, Wewak matters both as a practical regional centre and as the starting point for Sepik River journeys, cultural tours and WWII history. Its relaxed coastal setting, river access and role as the province's transport and commercial centre make it relevant to leisure and business visitors alike.
