About Wewak International Airport
Wewak International Airport, also known as Boram Airport, is the main air gateway to Wewak and the East Sepik region of Papua New Guinea. It handles scheduled domestic services connecting the Sepik area with Port Moresby and other regional centres.
The site has a long aviation history, beginning as a Japanese military airfield built from December 1942 during the Second World War. After being secured by Australian forces in 1945, the airfield was repaired and later developed into the civilian airport in use today.
Located approximately 4 km east of central Wewak, the airport has a single asphalt runway and a small passenger terminal handling all arrivals and departures. The short journey into town takes roughly 10–15 minutes by road, with taxis, hotel shuttles and private transfers available.
Although facilities are modest compared with larger airports, the airport provides essential passenger services including check-in counters, security screening, a small café and car parking. It serves as an important regional link for travellers visiting the Sepik River and surrounding communities.
