About Al Batinah North

Sohar is the capital and largest city of Oman's Al Batinah North Governorate, set on the Gulf of Oman coast about 200 km northwest of Muscat and close to the UAE border. Long known as a historic maritime port and the legendary birthplace of Sinbad the Sailor, the city pairs its seafaring heritage with a fast-growing modern economy.

Sohar's trading past remains visible at Sohar Fort, built between the 13th and 14th centuries, and at Sohar Gate, one of the city's best-known landmarks. The Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, the waterfront corniche and the traditional souq and fish market add everyday life and local character.

The corniche is the centre of evening activity, while Al Humbar and the souq area are busy with shops and markets. Coastal areas such as Sallan offer beaches and parks, and Falaj Al Qabail is known for hotels and family-friendly facilities.

Today Sohar is one of Oman's most important industrial centres, centred on the deep-water Port of Sohar and the Sohar Free Zone. These hubs attract logistics, metals, petrochemical and manufacturing businesses and make the city a key destination for corporate and project-related travel.

For visitors, Sohar combines Gulf seafood and Omani cooking with a relaxed coastal setting, modern hotels and easy access to Muscat and the wider Al Batinah region. It works equally well for a cultural stopover or a business trip to northern Oman.
