About Al Buraimi
Al Buraimi is an oasis city in north-western Oman, lying directly across the border from Al Ain in the United Arab Emirates. It serves as the capital of Al Buraimi Governorate and has long been an important crossroads for trade, date farming and cross-border movement in the region.
The city's identity is rooted in its oasis heritage. Historically known as Tawam, the area grew around palm groves, villages and falaj irrigation systems, and it played a notable role in the 20th-century Buraimi Oasis dispute. Today that past remains visible in restored forts, traditional houses and a still-active old souq.
Key landmarks include Al Hillah Fort, Al Khandaq Fort, the Buraimi Souq and the redeveloped Al Buraimi Oasis area between the two forts. Nearby Jebel Hafeet rises on the border and offers panoramic views, while the surrounding villages and date gardens give the city a quieter, traditional character than Oman's coastal centres.
As a border hub, Al Buraimi has practical importance for trade, logistics and travellers moving between Oman and the UAE. It is home to University of Buraimi and other colleges, and its markets, service businesses and government offices make it a regional commercial and administrative centre.
For leisure visitors the city offers heritage, desert-edge scenery and an authentic Omani atmosphere, while business travellers value its border location, growing hospitality sector and role as a gateway between the Gulf and Oman.
