About Zelenikovo
Zelenikovo is a small municipality and village in the Skopje valley of central North Macedonia, located a short drive southeast of the capital, Skopje. The municipality spreads across gently rolling farmland and hills along the Vardar valley, made up of 14 rural settlements with the village of Zelenikovo as its administrative seat.
The area has deep historical roots. The Neolithic settlement of Slatina near Zelenikovo preserves traces of one of the earliest known farming communities in the region, while the archaeological site of Tauresium (Gradište) near the village of Taor is traditionally associated with the birthplace of the Byzantine emperor Justinian I. These sites connect the quiet countryside to a much older Balkan and Mediterranean past.
Life here remains strongly rural and community-focused. Scattered villages such as Orešani, Pakoševo, Smesnica, Taor and Tisovica sit among fields, orchards and vineyards, and the municipality is known for its agricultural production and its local folk music tradition, notably the kaval player Angele Dimovski, who was born in Zelenikovo.
Zelenikovo's position is practical rather than remote. The main railway corridor and road links pass through the municipality, and Skopje International Airport lies only about five kilometres away, making the area one of the closest rural districts to North Macedonia's main air gateway.
For travellers, Zelenikovo offers a low-key contrast to the capital: archaeological sites, open countryside and village life within easy reach of Skopje. For business visitors it sits near airport and logistics routes and the Skopje industrial belt, making it a convenient base for short stays and day trips.
