About Benue

Makurdi is the capital of Benue State in Nigeria's North Central region, set on the banks of the Benue River. As the administrative and commercial heart of a state known as the 'Food Basket of the Nation', the city is an important hub for agricultural trade, transport and education.

The city grew from an early twentieth-century river port and trading settlement into a regional capital after Benue State was created in 1976. Its riverfront setting remains central to local life, with the Benue River used for fishing, boating and informal waterfront activity, while historic structures such as the Royal Niger Company trading stores recall its colonial trading past.

Makurdi's neighbourhoods spread from the busy central market and Wurukum area to the Old GRA, High Level, Wadata, Ankpa Ward and the North Bank district across the river. Notable institutions include Benue State University, the Federal University of Agriculture Makurdi and the Nigerian Army School of Military Engineering, alongside the Makurdi Modern Market and a zoological garden.

Trade in yam, sesame, soybeans, rice, citrus and other produce gives the city much of its economic energy, supported by rail, road and river links. Local food reflects the area's farming heritage, and Tiv and Idoma cultural traditions appear in festivals, crafts and everyday markets.

For leisure travellers, Makurdi offers a genuine look at riverside Nigeria away from the larger coastal cities, while business visitors come for government, agriculture, education and logistics. Its airport, railway station and position on the Benue River make it a practical base for exploring Benue State.
