About Magway

Magway is the capital of Magway Region in central Myanmar, a compact riverside city on the eastern bank of the Irrawaddy (Ayeyarwady) River. It works as a trading, administrative and transport centre for much of Myanmar's dry zone, with a calmer, provincial character that contrasts with Yangon and Mandalay.

The city's best-known landmark is Mya Tha Lun Pagoda, a gilded stupa set on high ground above the river with wide sunset views; its annual festival attracts pilgrims from across the region. The riverside, Magway Central Market and the cultural museum offer a look at everyday life, while Minbu on the opposite bank adds another traditional town to explore.

Magway's identity is shaped by the Irrawaddy and the surrounding dry-zone landscape, where sesame, groundnuts and pulses are widely grown and the wider region has long been associated with oil production around Yenangyaung. The city is also linked to the legacy of General Aung San, who was born in nearby Natmauk.

For travellers, Magway is a slower, authentic central-Myanmar stop between Bagan, Mandalay and Yangon. Business visitors come for regional administration, agriculture and oil-related work, while leisure travellers use the city as a base for river views, pagoda visits and excursions into the dry zone. Its modest guesthouses, tea shops and local restaurants add to the practical, low-key appeal.
