About Žabljak
Žabljak is a small mountain town in northern Montenegro, set at roughly 1,450 metres above sea level on the slopes of the Durmitor massif. As the highest town in the Balkans, it serves as the main gateway to Durmitor National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage area of glacial lakes, pine forest and rugged peaks.
Its character is shaped by a long history of mountain settlement and, more recently, by its role as Montenegro's leading winter sports centre. Around the compact centre, traditional stone and timber buildings stand beside hotels, guesthouses, ski rental shops and restaurants, while Bobotov Kuk and other Durmitor summits rise nearby.
The best-known natural landmarks include Black Lake (Crno Jezero), reached by an easy trail from town, and the Tara River Canyon, one of Europe's deepest gorges. The Đurđevića Tara Bridge is a famous viewpoint and rafting base, while the Savin Kuk ski area offers pistes and lifts for winter visitors.
Summer brings hikers, mountain bikers and rafters, while winter draws skiers and snowboarders to local slopes and nearby touring routes. A small but steady calendar of mountain events, folk gatherings and outdoor competitions adds to the town's appeal throughout the year.
For travellers, Žabljak works as both a self-contained nature destination and a base for exploring northern Montenegro. Leisure visitors come for the national park, canyons and lakes, while small conferences and team-building trips use its mountain hotels and meeting spaces, making it relevant for business travel as well.

Žabljak Travel Guide
Best Time to Visit
December to March is the main ski season, with reliable snow at the Savin Kuk slopes, while June to September is best for hiking, rafting and visiting Black Lake. Late spring and autumn are quieter, with clear mountain weather and autumn colours.
How to Get Around
The compact town centre is easy to explore on foot, and local taxis and minibuses serve nearby points. A rental car is the most practical way to reach Durmitor viewpoints, Black Lake, the Tara canyon and outlying villages, especially outside the ski season.
Where to Stay
Most visitors stay in the town centre, where hotels, guesthouses and apartments are close to restaurants, ski services and the lake trail. Quieter mountain lodges and rural guesthouses around Black Lake and nearby villages suit hikers and travellers looking for nature.
Food & Drink
Žabljak's restaurants serve hearty mountain cooking such as kačamak, cicvara, grilled meats, local cheese, kajmak and honey. Cafés, bakeries and small restaurants in the centre offer a simple base for meals after a day outdoors.
