About Podgorica

Podgorica is the capital and largest city of Montenegro, set where the Ribnica and Morača rivers meet on the edge of the Zeta Plain. It is the country's administrative, political and economic centre, yet it feels smaller and more relaxed than many European capitals, with café terraces, riverside walks and the wooded slopes of Gorica Hill close to the centre.

Much of the modern city was rebuilt after heavy wartime destruction, so its centre mixes mid-century blocks with contemporary developments. Around the old Ottoman quarter of Stara Varoš, the 18th-century Clock Tower and narrow lanes recall an older settlement, while nearby ruins of the Ribnica fortress mark the confluence of the two rivers. The hilltop ruins of the Roman town of Duklja lie just north of the city.

Landmarks include the striking Millennium Bridge over the Morača, the Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ, Osmanagić Mosque and several parks and squares. Gorica Hill, which gave the city its name, offers trails and views, while the Petrović Palace in Kruševac park houses the Centre of Contemporary Art.

Podgorica serves as a practical base for Montenegro: Skadar Lake, the Adriatic coast, and mountain regions are all within easy reach. Its café culture, restaurants and laid-back nightlife, together with government institutions, universities and a growing business and IT scene, make it relevant for both leisure and business travellers.

Despite a compact centre, the city rewards slow exploration through its riverside promenades, markets and local neighbourhoods, offering a less crowded introduction to Montenegrin life than the coastal resorts.
