About Berane
Berane is a small town in northeastern Montenegro, set along the Lim River and ringed by the forested slopes of the Bjelasica mountains. It serves as the administrative and cultural centre of the Polimlje region, where mountain landscapes, farmland and a long trading past shape everyday life.
The town's history spans Ottoman and earlier periods, and it was known as Ivangrad from 1949 until 1992. The 13th-century Đurđevi Stupovi Monastery, about two kilometres from the centre, is the best-known local landmark, while the Ottoman-era Redžepagić Tower and the Church of the Holy Trinity reflect the area's layered heritage.
Around the centre, visitors can explore the Museum of Polimlje, walk along the Lim River promenade and visit the Freedom Monument at Jasikovac. Nearby Bjelasica offers hiking trails, glacial lakes and winter snow sports, making Berane a useful base for outdoor trips.
Berane is also a regional hub for education, wood processing and public services, with a modest business community linked to forestry, agriculture and trade. Markets, cafés and traditional restaurants give the town a practical, welcoming character rather than a mass-tourism atmosphere.
For travellers, Berane works as both a stopover between Podgorica, Kolašin and the northern mountains and as a base for slower exploration of rural Montenegro, with easy access to Biogradska Gora National Park and the wider Bjelasica range.
