About Ömnögovi

Dalanzadgad is the capital of Ömnögovi Province and the main gateway to Mongolia's Gobi Desert. Located about 580 kilometres south of Ulaanbaatar, this compact desert town is the service hub for travellers heading to Gobi Gurvan Saikhan National Park and the surrounding sand dunes and canyons.

The town developed as an administrative centre from 1931 and has grown with the region's mining and transport economy. Its small centre holds the provincial museum, local shops and markets, while Buddhist and socialist-era elements give the town a mixed sense of place.

Most visitor services are concentrated along the main road, with a modest range of hotels, guesthouses, restaurants and tour operators. From here, day trips reach Yolyn Am gorge, the Khongoryn Els sand dunes and the Bayanzag Flaming Cliffs, where dinosaur fossils have been found.

Mining is central to the local economy: the Oyu Tolgoi copper and gold mine and the Tavan Tolgoi coal fields lie within the province and bring business travellers, engineers and logistics activity to the area.

For leisure visitors it offers access to dramatic Gobi landscapes and nomadic culture, while business travellers use it as a base for mining-related work. Both benefit from its small but practical airport, shops and accommodation.

Ömnögovi Travel Guide

Best Time to Visit

May to September is the most practical period, with milder weather in late spring and early autumn. Summer can be very hot, while winters are cold and windy, making desert excursions more challenging.

How to Get Around

Dalanzadgad itself is small and walkable, and local taxis serve short trips around town. For the Gobi's remote sights, a four-wheel-drive vehicle or an organised tour with a local driver is the most reliable option.

Where to Stay

Hotels and guesthouses are concentrated in the town centre, near the main road and within a short drive of the airport. Traditional ger camps near Gobi Gurvan Saikhan National Park offer a closer-to-nature stay.

Food & Drink

Local restaurants serve Mongolian staples such as buuz, khuushuur, mutton dishes and dairy products. Ger camps and small cafés in town provide meals for travellers heading into the desert.
