About Khentii

Öndörkhaan, officially named Chinggis City, is the capital of Khentii Province in eastern Mongolia. It lies on the Kherlen River about 290 km east of Ulaanbaatar and serves as the main gateway to the steppes and forested mountains of the province associated with Genghis Khan's early life.

The settlement dates to at least 1660, when Gundgavirlan Monastery was founded near today's city centre; the monastery once housed more than 1,000 monks before being closed in the 1930s and largely destroyed. Today the city is known for its many Genghis Khan statues, a renovated Buddhist monastery south of the Kherlen River, and Soviet-era monuments in Khan Park.

Key places to visit include the Ethno Museum of Khentii, also called the Tsetsen Palace Museum, the Local Resource Museum, the Buddhist monastery and the Turkic balbal stone figure about 7 km southwest of town. Khan Park runs through the centre and offers monuments, Soviet tanks and a Genghis Khan statue.

As a regional transport and trade hub, Öndörkhaan connects Ulaanbaatar with Choibalsan and Baruun-Urt, and it is a useful base for trips to Burkhan Khaldun mountain and the Delüün Boldog birthplace site near Dadal. The local Buryat community adds distinctive boots, bread and bakery traditions.

For travelers, the city offers simple guesthouses and hotels, Mongolian eateries serving buuz and khuushuur, and access to the wider Khan Khentii region. It is relevant for both leisure visitors tracing Genghis Khan heritage and business travelers moving through eastern Mongolia.

Khentii Travel Guide

Best Time to Visit

Summer from June to August is the most comfortable season, with warm days, green steppe and the Naadam festival in July. Spring and early autumn are also workable but windier, while winter brings very cold temperatures that can fall below -30°C.

How to Get Around

Öndörkhaan is a small city, roughly 5 km long, so the centre is easy to explore on foot. Local taxis are common and can be flagged on the street or found near the West Market, while shared vans and intercity buses link the city with Ulaanbaatar and other eastern towns.

Where to Stay

Most accommodation is central, close to Khan Park, the main road and the bus station. Options range from simple guesthouses and older hotels such as Jonon or Governor's Hotel to more comfortable choices like Hotel Ezent Guren and Hotel Negdulchin.

Food & Drink

Small guanzs along the main street serve quick Mongolian staples such as buuz and khuushuur, while restaurants like Khangard, Och and China Restaurant offer fuller menus. Buryat bread, dairy products and local bakeries add a distinctive regional flavour.
