About Arkhangai

Tsetserleg is the capital of Arkhangai Province in central Mongolia, set on the northeastern slopes of the Khangai Mountains. Its name means garden, a fitting description for a compact provincial town surrounded by wooded hills, river valleys and pastureland.

The town grew around Zayain Khüree, a major Buddhist monastic complex founded in the 17th century by Zaya Pandita Luvsanperenlei. Much of the former monastery now houses the Arkhangai Aimag Museum, while Buyandelgeruulekh Monastery remains an active religious centre and local landmark.

Tsetserleg is compact and easy to explore on foot, with small markets, cafés, guesthouses and administrative buildings clustered near the centre. From town, travellers can reach nearby sites such as Taikhar Chuluu rock, Tsenkher hot springs and the open landscapes of the Khangai range.

As a regional centre, Tsetserleg supports local herding, trade, education and services, and functions as a practical base for trips across Arkhangai Province. Its small size and relaxed pace appeal to travellers seeking a quieter alternative to Ulaanbaatar.

Leisure visitors come for monasteries, Naadam festivals, hot springs and mountain scenery, while business and project travellers use the town for regional administration and fieldwork. Its role as a road hub for central Mongolia makes it a natural stop between Ulaanbaatar and destinations further west.

Arkhangai Travel Guide

Best Time to Visit

Summer, from June to August, brings warm days, green valleys and the local Naadam celebrations in mid-July. Late spring and early autumn are also pleasant for hiking and sightseeing, while winter is very cold and best suited to travellers prepared for snow and short daylight hours.

How to Get Around

Tsetserleg's compact centre is easy to explore on foot. Local taxis and shared vehicles cover the town, and buses or minivans connect Tsetserleg with Ulaanbaatar and nearby sums; a private driver or 4x4 is useful for reaching monasteries, hot springs and mountain areas.

Where to Stay

Small hotels and guesthouses near the centre offer simple, convenient bases close to the market and museums. Ger camps on the edge of town or in the surrounding valleys provide a more traditional stay and easy access to Arkhangai's countryside.

Food & Drink

Local meals centre on Mongolian staples such as mutton, noodles, buuz dumplings and khuushuur, often served in small cafés and canteens. Markets and shops sell dairy products including airag and aaruul, and the town has a handful of casual restaurants.
