About Sonora
Hermosillo is the capital and largest city of Sonora, a desert state in northwestern Mexico known for its strong industrial base, sunny weather and Sonoran cuisine. Located about 280 kilometres south of the Arizona border, the city is often called 'La Ciudad del Sol' because of its clear skies and hot summers.
Founded in 1700 as Pitic and later renamed after José María González Hermosillo, the city blends colonial and modern elements. Around the central Plaza Zaragoza, visitors find the Cathedral of the Assumption, the Government Palace and shaded streets, while Cerro de la Campana offers panoramic views over the urban area. The Museum of Popular and Indigenous Cultures of Sonora and the Sonora Ecological Center highlight the region's heritage and desert wildlife.
The historic centre is the focus for sightseeing, dining and hotels, while newer commercial areas stretch along boulevards such as Vado del Río. Parque Madero and the coastal town of Bahía de Kino, about 110 kilometres west on the Gulf of California, provide outdoor escapes for residents and visitors.
Hermosillo is an important hub for automotive manufacturing, aerospace, agriculture and trade, anchored by a Ford assembly plant and the University of Sonora. The local food scene centres on grilled beef, burritos percherones, seafood from Bahía de Kino, coyotas and the regional agave spirit bacanora. Annual events such as the Fiestas del Pitic and ExpoGan add to the city's calendar.
For travellers, Hermosillo works as both a business destination and a gateway to Sonora's desert and coastline. Its warm climate, regional identity and growing economy make it a practical base for exploring northwestern Mexico.
