About Ciudad de México
Mexico City is Mexico's capital and largest city, a high-altitude metropolis built on the site of the Aztec capital Tenochtitlan. It is the country's political, cultural and economic centre, mixing pre-Hispanic heritage, Spanish colonial architecture and modern urban life across one of the largest metropolitan areas in the Americas. The city's history is visible at the Zócalo, the vast main square flanked by the Metropolitan Cathedral and the National Palace, and at the nearby Templo Mayor, the excavated remains of the Aztec ceremonial centre. Chapultepec Park, the Palacio de Bellas Artes and the canals of Xochimilco show the range of landmarks from the colonial era to the present day. Neighbourhoods such as Roma, Condesa, Polanco, Coyoacán and the Centro Histórico each have a distinct character, from tree-lined cafés and Art Deco streets to museums, markets, fine dining and historic monuments. The Frida Kahlo Museum, the National Museum of Anthropology and the Soumaya Museum are among the city's major cultural attractions. Mexico City is also a leading centre for business, finance, media and international events, with a strong food scene that ranges from street tacos and traditional markets to globally recognised restaurants. Its arts, nightlife and year-round cultural calendar attract both leisure and business travellers.
