About Tsingoni
Tsingoni is a small commune on the west coast of Grande-Terre, the main island of Mayotte, a French overseas department in the Mozambique Channel. It is known as the historic cradle of the Mayotte sultanate and as the home of the oldest mosque in France, giving the town a strong Swahili-Comorian and Islamic heritage alongside its tropical island setting.
The commune gathers four villages: Tsingoni, Mroalé, Combani and Miréréni. The centrepiece is the sixteenth-century Tsingoni Mosque, completed in 1538, with whitewashed walls, a carved coral mihrab and old Shirazi tombs nearby. Winding alleys in the old village lead past traditional houses and down toward the beach facing the mosque.
Beyond the historic core, the Cascade de Soulou waterfall drops about 27 metres through dense vegetation and feeds natural pools, while the west-coast shoreline offers calm lagoon views and beaches. Combani, the main commercial village, has a busy market, shops and services used by residents across the plateau area.
Tsingoni is primarily agricultural and residential, with tourism, local trade and small services shaping daily life. It sits along the RN1 road linking the west of Mayotte to Mamoudzou and the airport at Dzaoudzi–Pamandzi, making it a practical stop for visitors exploring Grande-Terre.
For travellers, Tsingoni offers a quieter, heritage-focused contrast to Mamoudzou, combining the oldest mosque in France, waterfall walks, coastal scenery and a genuine look at Mahoran village life. It appeals mainly to leisure visitors, while its road access and proximity to the island's administrative and economic centres keep it relevant for those moving around Mayotte.

Tsingoni Travel Guide
Best Time to Visit
The dry season from May to November is the most comfortable time to visit, with June to September offering the mildest, least humid weather. The wet season from December to April brings heavier rain, heat and a risk of cyclones.
How to Get Around
Tsingoni is best explored by rental car, taxi or private transfer, since public transport in Mayotte is limited to informal bush taxis and local buses. The main RN1 road connects the commune to Mamoudzou and other parts of Grande-Terre, while a ferry links Grande-Terre with the airport island of Petite-Terre.
Where to Stay
Accommodation in Tsingoni itself is limited, mostly to small guesthouses and local lodgings. Most hotels are concentrated around Mamoudzou and Petite-Terre, but staying on the west coast offers easy access to the mosque, Soulou waterfall and quieter beaches.
Food & Drink
Mahoran and Comorian dishes dominate locally, including grilled fish, mataba made from cassava leaves in coconut milk, and pilaou rice. Markets such as Combani and small local eateries serve snacks and street food, with more varied restaurants found in Mamoudzou.
