About Ouangani
Ouangani is a small rural commune in the centre-west of Mayotte, a French overseas department in the Indian Ocean between Madagascar and the East African coast. Spread across green hills and river valleys, the commune includes the villages of Ouangani, Barakani, Hapandzo, Coconi and Kahani, each with its own village life and strong agricultural character.
Agriculture and nature define much of the area. Coconi is an important local farming centre, home to the Pôle d'Excellence Rurale, an agricultural college and the well-known Marché de Coconi, where growers sell tropical fruit, vegetables and local products. Waterfalls at Barakani and Ouangani, the botanical garden and forested walking routes make the commune a rewarding base for nature-focused visits.
Culturally, Ouangani offers a close look at everyday Mahoran traditions, from market days and local cooking to community events and craftwork. Visitors can see a quieter, more rural side of Mayotte than in the busier coastal towns, while still staying within reach of Mamoudzou and other parts of Grande-Terre.
Ouangani lies along the RN2 road network, roughly 27 km from Dzaoudzi–Pamandzi International Airport, and is best reached by rental car, shared taxi or pre-arranged transfer. Its location makes it practical for day trips to waterfalls, markets and hiking trails in the central-west of the island.
For travellers seeking an authentic, slow-paced introduction to Mayotte, Ouangani suits hiking, local food and rural culture, while still providing straightforward access to the island's main airport and administrative centre.
