About Guidimaka
Sélibaby is the capital of Mauritania's Guidimaka Region, in the far south of the country near the Senegal and Mali borders. Unlike much of the desert nation, this Sahelian town sits in a greener, higher-rainfall landscape of savannah, seasonal watercourses and farmland. Founded in the early 19th century by the nomad Ould Ely Baby, Sélibaby grew into a regional crossroads where Soninke, Fula, Moor and Wolof communities meet. The oldest quarter, Bambaradougou, preserves the town's early Soninke roots, while districts such as College, Silo, Ferlo and Nezaha spread across the settlement, some separated by wadis and cultivated plots. Sélibaby has no large monuments; its character comes from everyday Sahelian life. The busy market draws traders from Mauritania, Senegal and Mali, and the nearby Foum Gleita dam on the Gorgol Noir supports irrigated farming and fishing. A colonial-era bridge and the tall Silo structure are local landmarks. As an administrative and commercial centre, Sélibaby serves the Guidimaka region's public services, agriculture and cross-border trade. Its airport, small guesthouses and road links to Nouakchott, Kayes and the Senegal River valley make it a practical base for regional travel. For visitors, Sélibaby offers a quieter alternative to Mauritania's larger cities: a glimpse of the country's southern Sahel, multi-ethnic markets and the green valleys around the Gorgol basin.

Guidimaka Travel Guide
Best Time to Visit
The cooler dry season from November to February is the most comfortable time to visit Sélibaby, with lower temperatures and generally dry roads. The rainy season from around June to October brings greener landscapes but can make some routes difficult.
How to Get Around
Sélibaby is small enough to explore central areas on foot or by shared taxi. For trips to Foum Gleita, nearby villages or the Senegalese and Malian border areas, visitors rely on bush taxis, private vehicles and locally arranged transfers.
Where to Stay
Accommodation is limited and concentrated near the centre, with small auberges and guesthouses used mainly by business and NGO travellers. Staying near the main market and administrative area keeps restaurants, banks and transport close.
Food & Drink
Local meals centre on rice, millet and sauces, with grilled meat, fish from the Gorgol basin and sweet mint tea widely available. Small restaurants and market stalls serve Mauritanian and West African dishes, and fresh produce appears at the central market.
