About Mopti
Mopti is central Mali's main river port, built where the Bani River joins the Niger at the edge of the Inner Niger Delta. Often called the "Venice of Mali," it is a lively crossroads of fishing, trade and river transport whose daily rhythm revolves around its crowded harbour and busy markets.
The city grew from a small Bozo fishing settlement into a colonial-era trading and administrative centre, and its riverside position still shapes its identity. The Komoguel Mosque, built in the 1930s–40s, is the most recognisable landmark and a notable example of Sudano-Sahelian mud-brick architecture.
The old quarter of Komoguel is the historic heart, with narrow streets, the port and the fish market, while the commercial centre and the neighbouring town of Sévaré, about 10–14 km away, serve as practical entry points and bases. The Thursday market and artisan stalls add to the city's trading character.
Mopti is the gateway to some of Mali's best-known destinations, including Djenné, the Dogon Country and Timbuktu, which are reached by road or by riverboat along the Niger. Fishing, commerce and regional administration anchor its economy, making the city relevant for business and logistics as well as tourism.
For travellers, Mopti offers an authentic riverine Sahelian experience centred on the port, local crafts and excursions into the wider Niger Delta region.

Mopti Travel Guide
Best Time to Visit
The cooler dry season from November to February offers the most comfortable conditions for exploring Mopti. Higher water levels in the Niger from roughly August to December are better for river journeys toward Timbuktu.
How to Get Around
Central Mopti is compact and easy to explore on foot, especially around the old town and port. Shared taxis and moto-taxis connect the city with Sévaré and nearby areas, while pirogues and pinasses handle river travel.
Where to Stay
Komoguel and the riverside area suit visitors who want to stay close to the port, mosque and markets. Sévaré, near the airport and bus station, has larger hotels and lodges and is often used as a practical base for the region.
Food & Drink
Mopti's food centres on fresh river fish, particularly capitaine, usually grilled or served with rice. Small restaurants, street grills, the fish market and tea stands around the port offer simple local meals.
