About Mali
Mali is a landlocked West African country where the Niger River connects ancient Sahelian cities, desert landscapes and a living tradition of music, craft and hospitality. Its historic trading towns and distinctive earthen architecture give it a character unlike almost anywhere else in the region.
Bamako, the capital, spreads along the Niger River and is the country's main entry point and cultural centre. Further afield, Timbuktu and Djenné are known worldwide for their centuries-old mosques and manuscripts, while Mopti sits at the meeting point of the Niger and Bani rivers as a busy market town.
Beyond the cities, Mali ranges from the Bandiagara Escarpment and the cliff villages of Dogon Country to the semi-arid Sahel and the Sahara in the north. The Great Mosque of Djenné, one of the world's largest mud-brick buildings, reflects a building tradition shaped by the climate and by centuries of trade across the region.
Mali has strong roots in the medieval empires of West Africa and remains known for its music, from griot traditions to modern Malian blues. Festivals such as the Festival sur le Niger in Ségou draw visitors for performances and craft, although travel conditions and security can vary by region.
Bamako's Modibo Keïta International Airport is the main gateway, with roads, buses and river transport linking towns in the south and centre of the country. This network supports practical journeys between the airport, hotels, business areas, venues and key destinations, though infrastructure can be limited in more remote regions.
