About Blantyre
Blantyre is Malawi's commercial and financial hub and its second-largest city, set in the Shire Highlands of the Southern Region. Named after the Scottish birthplace of missionary and explorer David Livingstone, the city grew from a mission station founded in 1876 into the centre of Malawian trade, banking and manufacturing, and now forms a continuous urban area with the industrial town of Limbe.
Its history remains visible in buildings such as St Michael and All Angels Church, a striking late-19th-century brick church built by local craftsmen without formal architectural training, and Mandala House, which dates from 1882 as the headquarters of the African Lakes Company and is among the country's oldest surviving buildings. The Old Boma, Chichiri Museum and the tobacco auction floors in Limbe add further depth.
Blantyre's districts range from the central business area around Victoria Avenue to the commercial streets of Limbe and the cultural zone of Chichiri, home to the Museum of Malawi and the city's main stadium. Leafy residential suburbs such as Mount Pleasant, Sunnyside, Kabula and Namiwawa sit among hills and eucalyptus-lined roads, while tea estates at nearby Thyolo and the highlands around Mulanje and Zomba offer easy day trips.
As the commercial capital, Blantyre hosts banks, the Malawi Stock Exchange, manufacturing and industries linked to tea, coffee and tobacco. Its restaurants, cafés and bars mix Malawian staples such as nsima with Indian, Chinese and international cooking, and the historic Carlsberg brewery reflects the city's long industrial tradition.
For travellers, Blantyre works as both a business destination and a gateway to southern Malawi's national parks, tea country and mountains. It offers a practical base for meetings, conferences and commerce while giving leisure visitors access to authentic urban life, colonial-era landmarks and nearby wildlife reserves such as Majete and Lengwe.
