About Triesen

Triesen is a municipality in the Oberland region of Liechtenstein, set against the Rätikon range in the south-west of the country between Balzers and Vaduz. With around 5,600 residents it is Liechtenstein's third-largest municipality, but it keeps the atmosphere of a compact Alpine village surrounded by vineyards, woodland and mountain slopes.

The settlement is first mentioned in 1155 as Trisun, and its upper village preserves one of the oldest sacred buildings in the country. The small St. Mamerta Chapel dates from the 9th or early 10th century and stands on a plateau above the village, while the neo-Gothic parish church of St. Gallus was built in the 1840s to a design by the Viennese architect Georg Wingelmüller.

Visitors can explore the historic Oberdorf with its chapel and old houses, the Marienkapelle and the Lawena Museum, which documents rural life in the side valley. Above the village, hiking routes lead into the Lawena and Falknis area; the municipal boundary includes the Grauspitz, at 2,599 metres the highest point in Liechtenstein.

Triesen also has a working, modern side. Its Rhine valley floor is home to industrial and commercial firms, and the Private University in the Principality of Liechtenstein (UFL) is based here. The capital Vaduz is only a few minutes away, making Triesen a convenient base for business in the whole country.

For leisure travellers, Triesen offers easy access to hiking, cycling and the Liechtenstein Trail, as well as a quieter alternative to Vaduz. Business visitors benefit from the short distances, nearby services and direct bus links, while restaurants and local vineyards add a taste of regional culture.

Triesen Travel Guide

Best Time to Visit

Late spring to early autumn, roughly May to October, is best for hiking and exploring Triesen with mild weather and clear mountain views. Autumn offers particularly good visibility, while winter is quieter and suited to lower-elevation walks.

How to Get Around

Triesen is served by Liechtenstein's LIEmobil buses with regular connections to Vaduz, Balzers and Schaan. There is no railway station in the village, so many visitors use buses to reach Swiss rail hubs such as Sargans or Buchs, or travel by taxi, private transfer or car.

Where to Stay

Triesen has a small selection of hotels and guesthouses, including options on the slopes above the village. Vaduz and Balzers, both a short bus ride away, provide a wider range of hotels and are convenient bases for exploring the region.

Food & Drink

Local restaurants serve Liechtenstein and Alpine specialities such as Käsknöpfle and Ribel, alongside Swiss and Austrian influences. Triesen's hillside vineyards contribute to the country's small wine scene, and cafés and dining options in nearby Vaduz add more variety.
