About Schellenberg
Schellenberg is Liechtenstein's smallest municipality by area, a quiet settlement in the Unterland lowlands on the wooded Eschnerberg ridge above the Rhine valley. Its scattered hamlets of Vorderer, Mittlerer and Hinterer Schellenberg give it a rural, unhurried character, with views across the river towards Switzerland and the Austrian border nearby.
History is woven into the landscape. The municipality takes its name from a Bavarian knightly family, and two medieval castle ruins, Untere Burg (Alt-Schellenberg) and Obere Burg (Neu-Schellenberg), still overlook the Eschnerberg. The Lordship of Schellenberg was purchased by the Princes of Liechtenstein in 1699, and together with Vaduz it became the basis of the Principality of Liechtenstein in 1719. The Russian Monument in Hinterschellenberg recalls around 500 soldiers who were granted asylum here at the end of the Second World War.
Today visitors come mainly for the slow pace, local heritage and walking routes. Key sights include the castle ruins, the Russian Monument, the parish church of the Immaculate Heart of Mary and the historic Biedermannhaus. The Eschnerberg historical high-altitude trail connects viewpoints, forest paths and small hamlets with neighbouring municipalities such as Mauren and Eschen.
Although small, Schellenberg sits within easy reach of Vaduz, the main towns of the Unterland and the nearby Swiss and Austrian borders. This makes it a practical base for exploring Liechtenstein's compact cultural attractions, the Rhine valley and the surrounding Alps.
For both leisure and business travellers, Schellenberg offers a quiet alternative to busier centres. Short distances to Vaduz, Feldkirch and Buchs mean meetings, events and regional sightseeing are all easily accessible while staying in a calm, scenic setting.
