About Margibi
Kakata is the capital and largest city of Margibi County, Liberia, sitting about 55 kilometres northeast of Monrovia along the paved Monrovia–Kakata highway. It is a busy transit and trading town at the heart of Liberia's historic rubber-producing belt, where commercial traffic moves between the capital, the port area and the interior.
The town developed around agriculture, education and trade. The Booker Washington Institute, founded in 1929, is one of Liberia's oldest vocational and agricultural training institutions, while the Kakata Rural Teacher Training Institute has long made Kakata an education centre for Margibi County. The Du River marks the town's boundary with neighbouring Todee District, and a large daily market in the town centre draws traders and shoppers from surrounding communities.
Much of the surrounding landscape is planted with rubber, including estates operated by companies such as Morris American Rubber Company and Bright Farm, alongside smallholder farms. This gives Kakata a working agricultural character quite different from coastal Monrovia, with Kpelle and other local communities shaping everyday culture, language and food.
Kakata is also a practical base for travellers, positioned roughly 40 kilometres from Roberts International Airport and close to Harbel, home of the Firestone rubber operation. Road connections make the town a convenient stopping point between Monrovia, the airport and the interior.
For leisure and business visitors alike, Kakata offers a genuine look at provincial Liberia: a lively market town, established training institutions, rubber-country scenery and direct access to one of the country's main transport corridors.

Margibi Travel Guide
Best Time to Visit
The dry season from November to April is the most practical time to visit Kakata, when the Monrovia–Kakata highway and rural roads are at their most passable. Rain falls heavily from May to October and can slow travel and market activity.
How to Get Around
Shared taxis, motorbike taxis and small local vehicles handle most movement within Kakata and between nearby towns. For longer or more comfortable journeys, visitors can arrange private transfers, hire a car, or travel along the Monrovia–Kakata highway.
Where to Stay
Accommodation in Kakata is limited, mostly small guesthouses and lodges, so many visitors base themselves in Monrovia or Harbel and travel in for the day. Staying in the town centre keeps the daily market, institutes and transport links within easy reach.
Food & Drink
Kakata's food reflects everyday Liberian cooking, with rice served alongside palava sauce, palm butter, cassava leaf or fufu, plus grilled fish and meat at local cook shops. The central market is a good place to find fresh produce, snacks and street food.
