About Grand Bassa
Buchanan, the capital of Grand Bassa County, is a coastal city in Liberia built around Waterhouse Bay at the mouth of the Saint John River. Lying roughly 110 kilometres southeast of Monrovia, it is one of Liberia's largest cities and is known for its fishing harbour, golden beaches and unhurried small-town character.
The city's history reaches back to the 1830s, when settlers from the United States established communities around Bassa Cove. Buchanan was named after Thomas Buchanan, the first governor of the Commonwealth of Liberia, and the surrounding county is one of Liberia's original three counties. The nearby town of Edina preserves 19th-century homes, churches and monuments linked to the Americo-Liberian settlers.
Buchanan's landmarks and attractions range from the busy Port of Buchanan and its lively central market to Sunset Beach and the wider Atlantic shoreline. The Saint John River and surrounding wetlands are good places for birdwatching, while Bassa Point offers a quiet coastal escape with an ecolodge on an isolated beach.
As the site of Liberia's second-busiest seaport, Buchanan has long been tied to iron ore shipping, fishing and regional trade. This port role, together with county administration and agriculture in the surrounding area, makes the city relevant for business and logistics visitors as well as leisure travellers.
For visitors, Buchanan works well as a relaxed weekend destination within reach of Monrovia, offering fresh seafood, beach time and a slower alternative to the capital. Business travellers come for port, government and agricultural work, while leisure visitors are drawn by the coast, birdlife and local history.

Grand Bassa Travel Guide
Best Time to Visit
The dry season from November to April is the most reliable period for beaches, birdwatching and road travel to and from Monrovia. Heavy rains from May to October can make some coastal and inland roads harder to navigate.
How to Get Around
The town centre, port and market are compact enough to explore on foot. Shared taxis and motorcycle taxis handle local journeys, while a private car or chauffeur is more comfortable for beaches, historic Edina and longer trips through Grand Bassa County.
Where to Stay
Buchanan offers small guesthouses and hotels in the town centre plus beachside stays such as the Kokon Ecolodge at Bassa Point. The town is convenient for the port and market, while the coast suits travellers looking for quiet beach time.
Food & Drink
Fresh seafood is the local highlight, with fish, crab, lobster and shrimp available at beach bars, market stalls and small restaurants. Everyday Liberian meals centre on rice, cassava and sauces such as palm butter, and local cafés offer simple dining across town.
