About Oudomxay

Muang Xay, also known as Oudomxay, is the capital of Oudomxay Province in northern Laos. Set in the Nam Ko River basin and ringed by forested mountains, it is a compact provincial centre and one of the busiest commercial and transport hubs in the north of the country.

The town's most visible landmark is the golden Phu That Stupa, a centuries-old hilltop structure that has become the symbol of Oudomxay. Nearby, the Oudomxay Museum sits on Phou Sebey hill and offers views across the town, while local temples and markets reflect the area's mix of lowland Lao, Khmu, Hmong and other ethnic communities.

Oudomxay is known for its ethnic diversity and handicrafts, including bamboo and rattan work from Ban Bo and textiles produced in the surrounding villages. Outside the town, travellers visit Chom Ong Cave, the Nam Kat Yola Pa protected area and Tad Nam Kat waterfall, along with the pilgrimage temple of Phra Chao Singkham.

As a key junction for roads leading to Luang Prabang, the Chinese border and Vietnam, Muang Xay serves both overland travellers and business visitors. Its role as the gateway to northern Laos gives it steady relevance for trade, logistics and tourism, while its markets, guesthouses and mountain setting offer a practical base for exploring the province.
