About Houaphanh
Xam Neua (also spelled Sam Neua) is the compact capital of Houaphanh Province, set among forested karst hills in far northeastern Laos near the Vietnam border. It is a quiet highland market town where Lao, Hmong and Tai Dam communities meet, and the main gateway to the province's wartime caves and limestone landscapes.
Its modern identity is closely tied to the Pathet Lao revolutionary period. About 30 km east, the Vieng Xai caves sheltered the wartime leadership and thousands of residents during bombing campaigns in the 1960s and 1970s, and today they form one of Laos's most memorable historical sites.
Around the town, visitors can explore Wat Pho Xai temple, the Nam Xam riverside, local weaving villages and the Hintang Archaeological Park, an ancient megalithic site set on a grassy ridge. The wider province includes Nam Et-Phou Louey National Park, known for trekking, wildlife and some of the country's best-protected forest.
As a regional trade centre, Xam Neua draws farmers and traders from surrounding valleys, and its markets are lively places to see textiles, produce and everyday highland life. The town is also famous in Laos for Xam Neua laap, a distinctive chopped meat salad often served with sticky rice and fresh herbs.
For travellers, Xam Neua is a rewarding stop for history, trekking and slow travel through one of Laos's least-visited provinces. Its mountain roads connect to Phonsavan, the Vietnamese border and Vientiane by bus or regional flights, making it a practical base for both independent explorers and business visitors to the northeast.

Best Time to Visit
The cool, dry months from November to February are the most comfortable for exploring Xam Neua, with clear skies and mild temperatures. The rainy season from May to October can make mountain roads slippery but leaves the landscape green and waterfalls full.
How to Get Around

Where to Stay
Most accommodation is concentrated near the town centre and market, ranging from simple guesthouses to a few small hotels. Vieng Xai also has basic guesthouses for travellers who want to visit the caves early, and advance booking is wise during peak season and festivals.
Food & Drink
