About Champasak

Champasak is a quiet riverside town in southern Laos, set on the west bank of the Mekong River in Champasak Province. Once the seat of the Kingdom of Champasak, it is best known today as the gateway to Wat Phou, a UNESCO-listed Khmer temple complex, and for its slow-paced traditional character.

The town's history is visible in its old French colonial buildings and riverside temples. Wat Phou, about 8 km southwest of town at the foot of Phou Khao, preserves pre-Angkorian and Khmer stone terraces, sanctuaries and carvings that overlook the Mekong plain.

Local life centres on the riverfront and the main street, with a handful of guesthouses, cafés and restaurants. Visitors also explore Vat Muang Kang, a temple blending Lao and European architectural influences, and take short boat crossings to Don Daeng island.

Beyond the town, the Bolaven Plateau offers coffee plantations and waterfalls, while Si Phan Don, the 4,000 Islands region, and Khone Phapheng Falls lie further south. Pakse, the provincial capital about 40 km north, serves as the region's transport and commercial hub.

Champasak appeals mainly to travellers interested in history, archaeology and Mekong scenery, while its connection to Pakse International Airport and the wider southern Laos circuit makes it an easy stop for leisure and small business trips.
