About Mubarak Al-Kabeer
Mubarak Al-Kabeer is a residential district and the administrative seat of Mubarak Al-Kabeer Governorate, lying about 20 kilometres southeast of Kuwait City's centre. Part of the wider Kuwait City metropolitan area, it is known for quiet, family-oriented neighbourhoods and a calmer pace than the capital's busy commercial districts.
The area is named after Sheikh Mubarak Al-Sabah, the seventh ruler of Kuwait, who governed from 1896 to 1915 and signed the 1899 protectorate agreement with Britain. The governorate itself was created on 27 November 1999, when Hawalli Governorate was divided, and was initially called Qurain Governorate before taking its present name.
Its districts include Sabah Al-Salem, Al-Qurain, Al-Adan, Al-Qusour, Abu Ftaira, Messila and Funaitees. Sabah Al-Salem is one of Kuwait's largest residential areas, while the coastal Messila district is known for Messilah Beach, the Jumeirah Messilah Beach Hotel & Spa and The Lake, a waterfront strip of restaurants and cafés in Abu Al Hasaniya.
The Al-Qurain district holds the Al-Qurain Martyrs Museum, a preserved house commemorating the Kuwaiti resistance fighters who confronted Iraqi forces in February 1991. Other local attractions include family entertainment at Trampo Extreme and Murouj, seasonal events at Al-Maseelah Beach and the nearby Sahara Kuwait Golf Resort.
For travellers, Mubarak Al-Kabeer offers a practical and authentic base close to Kuwait International Airport and major roads such as Fahaheel Expressway. With a high proportion of Kuwaiti residents, comfortable beachfront accommodation and easy access to Kuwait City's business, shopping and cultural attractions, it suits both leisure visitors and business travellers looking for a quieter stay.
