About Al Jahra
Al Jahra is a historic oasis city about 32 kilometres west of central Kuwait City and the capital of Kuwait's largest governorate. Once a farming and caravan settlement on the route between Kuwait and the desert interior, it remains the main gateway to the country's northern and western regions.
The city's most important landmark is the Kuwait Red Fort, also called the Red Palace, built in the late 1890s under Sheikh Mubarak Al-Sabah. The fort is best known as the site of the 1920 Battle of Jahra and now operates as a museum telling the story of Kuwait's early defence and state formation.
Around the old centre, Jahra Central Market and nearby shopping malls offer a mix of traditional produce, everyday goods and local dining, while districts such as Taima, Al Qasr, Al Waha, Al Oyoun, Al Naseem and Saad Al Abdullah extend the urban area. Natural landmarks include the Jahra Pools Nature Reserve, a wetland known for birdwatching, and Mutla Ridge, the highest point in Kuwait.
Al Jahra combines a strong local identity with practical road links to the capital, making it relevant for business travel to northern Kuwait's industrial, agricultural and infrastructure projects. Its desert access, weekend desert camps and quieter pace also attract visitors interested in Kuwait beyond the capital's towers and malls.
For leisure and business travellers alike, Al Jahra offers a different view of Kuwait: a gateway city rooted in oasis history, with heritage sites, wetlands and desert landscapes within easy reach of Kuwait International Airport and Kuwait City.
