About Taita–Taveta
Voi is the largest town in Taita-Taveta County and a key gateway to southern Kenya's Tsavo ecosystem. Set where the Nairobi–Mombasa highway meets the railway, the town is a practical stopover and supply point for visitors heading into Tsavo East National Park and nearby conservancies.
The town developed with the construction of the Uganda Railway in the late 19th century, and that history remains visible in its railway station and war cemetery. Today Voi combines a busy market centre with surrounding hills and protected areas, including the Sagala Hills and Ngutuni Wildlife Sanctuary.
Tsavo East National Park is the defining attraction, with the Voi Gate just north of town, Aruba Dam and Mudanda Rock among the best-known wildlife sites. Nearby, Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary, Lumo Community Wildlife Conservancy and views toward Mount Kilimanjaro broaden the safari options across Taita-Taveta County.
Voi also works as a regional transport and trading hub. The Madaraka Express rail service links the town with Mombasa and Nairobi, while the highway and local markets support small businesses, lodges and safari operators around the county.
This blend of safari access, rail and road connections, and everyday Kenyan town life gives Voi a distinctive and practical role in the Coast region for both leisure and business travellers.

Taita–Taveta Travel Guide
Best Time to Visit
The dry seasons from June to October and January to February are best for visiting Voi, with easier roads and reliable wildlife viewing in Tsavo East. April and May bring heavy rains, while November and December usually have short rains.
How to Get Around
Voi town is compact enough to walk, and tuk-tuks, boda bodas and taxis cover short trips. For Tsavo East and nearby conservancies, most visitors use a safari vehicle, guided tour or rental car because public transport inside the parks is limited.
Where to Stay
Safari lodges and camps are concentrated near Voi Gate and inside private conservancies such as Ngutuni, while simpler guesthouses and hotels cluster in Voi town itself. Staying in town suits budget travellers and train passengers, while lodges outside town offer closer wildlife access.
Food & Drink
Voi's food scene is built around Kenyan staples such as nyama choma, chapati, beans, rice and market produce, with small hotels and stalls serving local meals. Larger lodges offer fuller restaurant menus, and roadside cafés near the highway provide quick snacks and drinks.
