About Mangystau
Aktau is the capital and main port city of Mangystau Region, located on the eastern shore of the Caspian Sea in western Kazakhstan. A planned city built in an arid landscape, it is known for its white and pastel apartment blocks, wide streets, long seafront promenade and role as the main gateway to the Mangystau peninsula.
Founded in the late 1950s and early 1960s as the Soviet-era settlement of Shevchenko, Aktau was developed around uranium mining, oil and a Caspian port. It was renamed after Kazakhstan's independence, and its numbered microdistricts still reflect the original planned layout. Landmarks include the seafront promenade, the Taras Shevchenko monument, the regional history museum and the lighthouse near the port.
The city itself is compact and modern, but many visitors use it as a base for the dramatic desert landscapes of Mangystau. Day trips lead to the chalk towers of Bozzhira, the peak of Sherkala, the spherical stones of Torysh and the Karagiye Depression, while beaches along the Caspian coast offer a different kind of break.
Aktau is also an important oil, gas, port and logistics centre, with an international airport and a seaport that connect western Kazakhstan to Caspian and regional trade routes. Its hotels, business facilities and restaurants serve both corporate visitors and tourists exploring the region.
For leisure and business travellers, Aktau combines a coastal city atmosphere, Kazakh and Russian dining, and practical access to some of Kazakhstan's most unusual desert scenery.
