About Kyzylorda
Kyzylorda is the capital of Kazakhstan's Kyzylorda Region, a compact city on the Syr Darya river in the country's south. Founded in 1820 as the Kokand fortress of Ak-Mechet, or "White Mosque", it later became a Russian outpost and served as the capital of the Kazakh ASSR from 1925 to 1929, a chapter still reflected in its historic buildings and monuments.
The city's layered history remains visible around the center. The white-walled Akmeshit-Syrdarya Mosque, with its turquoise dome and four minarets, is one of the most striking modern landmarks in southern Kazakhstan, while the 1878 Aitbay Mosque is the city's oldest. A former 19th-century Orthodox church now houses the Kyzylorda Regional History Museum, and the Church of Our Lady of Kazan still serves as the city's only Orthodox church.
Around Central Square and the Syr Darya embankment, green parks and pedestrian spaces shape daily life. The Kazakh Musical Drama Theater anchors the main square, the Student Arbat is a lively walking street, and Korkyt Ata Park honors the legendary Turkic musician associated with the Syr Darya. Just outside the city, the Korkyt Ata Memorial Complex commemorates the same figure.
Kyzylorda is a gateway to the Syr Darya region's wider attractions, including the Baikonur Cosmodrome roughly 250 km away and routes toward the Aral Sea. The city and its region are also a major rice-growing area, and the bazaars, Kazakh cuisine and local musical traditions offer a strong sense of Syr Darya culture.
For travelers, Kyzylorda combines practical connections—a 1905 railway station that is itself a landmark and Korkyt Ata Airport—with a relaxed provincial pace. Business visitors pass through for regional agriculture, energy and transport activity, while leisure travelers use the city as a base for steppe landscapes, Silk Road-era sites and cultural exploration.

How to Get Around
Kyzylorda's center is walkable, and city buses and taxis serve the rest of the city. Taxi-hailing apps and negotiated local taxis are the most practical option for reaching the airport and moving between districts.
Where to Stay
The most convenient hotels are in the center near Central Square, the Syr Darya embankment and the railway station, close to restaurants and major sights. Accommodation choices are more limited than in Almaty or Astana, so booking ahead is useful.
