About Atyrau
Atyrau is the capital of Kazakhstan's Atyrau Region and the country's western oil and gas hub, set on the Ural River near the Caspian Sea. Because the river runs through the city, Atyrau sits on both banks of the traditional boundary between Europe and Asia, giving it an unusual cross-continental identity.
Founded in 1640 as the fishing settlement of Guryev, the city grew from a Caspian trading post into a centre of the Soviet oil industry before being renamed Atyrau in the early 1990s. Landmarks such as the 19th-century Uspensky Cathedral with its golden domes, the blue-domed Imangali Mosque and the Atyrau Regional Museum reflect this layered history.
The Ural River embankment is the city's main promenade and is crossed by a long pedestrian bridge that symbolically links Europe and Asia. Nearby Isatay-Makhambet Square honours local heroes, while the historic Zhilgorodok district preserves early oil-era architecture and the story of the Atyrau Oil Refinery. Riverside parks including Retro Park and Youth Park add green space.
Atyrau's economy is driven by oil and gas, with the giant Tengiz and Kashagan fields supporting a large corporate and expatriate community. The dining scene combines Kazakh staples such as beshbarmak, kazy and baursaks with Caspian fish and international restaurants, while bazaars and riverfront cafés offer a more local experience.
For travellers, Atyrau is a practical base for energy-sector business and a distinctive stop for those interested in the Caspian coast and the Europe–Asia divide. Atyrau International Airport connects the city to domestic hubs and destinations including Istanbul, Amsterdam and Moscow.
