About Akmola

Kokshetau is the administrative centre of Kazakhstan's Akmola Region, a compact northern city about 300 km north of Astana. The name means 'bluish mountain', and the city sits beside Lake Kopa with pine forests and rolling hills on its edges, giving it a greener, quieter character than many regional capitals.

Founded in 1824 as a Russian Empire military outpost, Kokshetau grew as a trading and agricultural centre and later became an important hub during the Soviet Virgin Lands campaign. Its history is reflected in the Akmola Regional History Museum, the Abylai Khan monument and square, and theatres such as the Akmola Regional Kazakh Music and Drama Theatre.

The city's central embankment along Lake Kopa is a popular walking area, while nearby Burabay and Kokshetau national parks offer lakes, forested hills and hiking routes. Local landmarks include the Regional History Museum, Nauan Hazrat Mosque, the Church of the Resurrection and Abylai Khan Square, where pedestrian streets connect shops, cafés and cultural venues.

Kokshetau is also a regional business and administrative centre with railway links, bus routes and Kokshetau International Airport serving the area. Its mix of Kazakh and Russian cultures, traditional food, theatres and access to northern Kazakhstan's lake country make it a practical stop for both leisure visitors and business travellers.

Where to Stay

The area around the city centre and the Lake Kopa embankment is convenient for museums, restaurants and public transport. Several hotels are located near central squares, while resorts and guesthouses outside town suit visitors heading to the national parks and lake areas.

Food & Drink

Kokshetau's dining scene mixes Kazakh staples such as beshbarmak, kazy and baursak with Russian, Caucasian and international cafés and restaurants. Local markets and bakeries offer a quick taste of the region, while lakeside and central venues cover everything from shashlik to casual coffee.
