About Okayama

Okayama is the capital of Okayama Prefecture in western Japan's Chūgoku region and a major stop on the Sanyo Shinkansen. Often called the Land of Sunshine for its mild, relatively dry climate, the city is best known for Korakuen Garden, one of Japan's three great landscape gardens, and the black-walled Okayama Castle. The city developed as a castle town under the Ikeda clan during the Edo period, and its heritage remains visible around the Asahi River. Korakuen, laid out in the late 17th century, combines ponds, lawns, teahouses and seasonal plantings, while Okayama Castle, nicknamed Crow Castle for its dark exterior, houses exhibits on the city's history. The main commercial area, Omotecho, sits near the castle and garden and is lined with covered shopping arcades, cafés and local food spots. Nearby Kurashiki's Bikan Historical Quarter, a short train ride west, preserves a canal-side district of white-walled storehouses converted into shops, museums and galleries. Okayama is also the capital of Japan's fruit kingdom, celebrated for white peaches, Muscat grapes and seasonal fruit parfaits. Local dishes such as barazushi, a colorful rice dish topped with Seto Inland Sea seafood and vegetables, and a morning market culture add to its food scene. For travellers, Okayama works as both a destination and a base: its station is a regional transport hub with fast links to Kurashiki, Hiroshima, Himeji and Kansai. A compact centre, refined garden culture and practical amenities make it appealing for leisure visits, while its role as a regional business and convention city supports work-related travel.
