About Yamoussoukro

Yamoussoukro is the official political and administrative capital of Ivory Coast, set about 240 km northwest of the country's economic hub, Abidjan. Developed from a modest village into a planned capital under President Félix Houphouët-Boigny, the city is known for its monumental scale, unusually wide boulevards and calm, spacious atmosphere.

History and architecture dominate the visitor experience. The Basilica of Our Lady of Peace, consecrated in 1990, is modelled on St. Peter's Basilica and is widely described as one of the world's largest churches. Nearby, the Presidential Palace, the crocodile lake and the Félix Houphouët-Boigny Foundation for Peace reflect the legacy of the country's first president.

Beyond the ceremonial centre, the city serves as an administrative and university centre, with institutions such as the Institut National Polytechnique Félix Houphouët-Boigny. The surrounding Lacs region offers reservoir scenery around Kossou Lake and Kossou Dam, along with agricultural landscapes that contrast with the capital's formal avenues.

Yamoussoukro is more relaxed and less congested than Abidjan, with a small selection of hotels, restaurants and local street food. The city hosted group-stage matches of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations and remains relevant for government, education and regional business travel.

Leisure travellers come mainly for the basilica, the crocodile lake and the city's unusual planned layout, while business and event travellers value its national institutions, conference facilities and road links to Abidjan and Bouaké.
