About Savanes
Korhogo is the largest city in northern Côte d'Ivoire and the capital of the Savanes District. Located roughly 630 km north of Abidjan, it serves as the commercial, administrative and cultural heart of the northern savanna and is closely tied to Senufo heritage.
The city grew from a Senufo settlement and developed as an important regional centre through the colonial and post-independence periods. Traditional authority remains visible in the Péléforo Gbon Coulibaly chieftaincy, while the regional museum of the same name preserves masks, statues, textiles and other objects linked to Senufo culture.
Central Korhogo is anchored by the Grand Marché and the city's main mosque, and artisan workshops are a defining feature of local life. Woodcarvers, weavers and painters of Korhogo cloth work in town and in nearby villages such as Koni, Kapélé and Torgokaha, where visitors can see basketry, beadwork and textile decoration being made.
Korhogo is also an agricultural and trading hub for cotton, cashew, mango and livestock, with road links toward Abidjan, Bamako and Ouagadougou. The city's university, regional institutions and growing services sector make it the main economic anchor of northern Côte d'Ivoire.
For travellers, Korhogo offers a base for exploring the northern savanna, Mount Korhogo and Senufo craft villages, as well as a practical stop for business, conferences and journeys across the region. Its markets, crafts and distinctive northern atmosphere set it apart from the coastal south.
