About Montagnes

Man is the capital of the Montagnes District in western Ivory Coast and the main urban centre of the mountainous Tonkpi region. Nicknamed the city of 18 mountains, it sits among forested hills and rocky peaks that give it a cooler, greener character than the country's coastal cities.

The town grew as a colonial and market centre and remains the heartland of the Dan (Yacouba) people, known for traditional masks, stilt dancing and woven textiles. Its central market is filled with local fabrics, crafts and produce from the surrounding cocoa and coffee growing areas.

Natural landmarks define much of Man's appeal: the Dent de Man rock peak, Mount Tonkoui, the Zadepleu waterfalls and nearby liana bridges over the Cavally River draw visitors exploring western Ivory Coast. The hill climate and surrounding forests make the city a refreshing contrast to Abidjan.

Man is also a regional trade and transport hub for coffee, cocoa, rice and timber, with road links toward Abidjan, Yamoussoukro and the border areas. A small airport serves domestic flights, while hotels, guesthouses and local guides support a steadily growing tourism sector.

For travellers, Man offers a mix of outdoor scenery, living Dan culture and relaxed mountain-town atmosphere, making it a distinctive stop for independent visitors and organised tours across western Ivory Coast.

Montagnes Travel Guide

Best Time to Visit

The dry season from November to March is the most comfortable period to visit Man, with clearer roads and easier access to waterfalls and mountain viewpoints. April to October brings heavier rain, which can make some rural tracks muddy even though the hills stay green.

How to Get Around

Man is compact enough to explore partly on foot, especially around the central market and older districts. Shared taxis and motorcycle taxis cover the town, while a private car, local guide or rental vehicle helps when reaching the Dent de Man, Mount Tonkoui and outlying villages.

Where to Stay

Most hotels and guesthouses are concentrated in the town centre near the market and main roads. Quieter options and small lodges can be found on the outskirts close to natural sites, with simple amenities suited to both business visitors and tourists.

Food & Drink

Man's food is built around Ivorian staples such as rice, attiéké, plantain, grilled meat and fish, served in maquis and simple restaurants. The central market is a good place to try fresh fruit, local coffee and snacks, while neighbourhood maquis offer everyday evening dining.
