About Sassandra-Marahoué
Sassandra-Marahoué is a district in central-western Côte d'Ivoire whose capital, Daloa, known locally as the city of antelopes, is one of the country's largest cities and an important cocoa and coffee trading centre. The district brings together the Haut-Sassandra and Marahoué regions, stretching from forested farmland in the south to drier savanna and gallery forest in the north.
Daloa grew from a settlement of the Bété and Guro peoples and became a French military post in 1903 before developing into a plantation-economy crossroads. Today the district remains culturally diverse, with Bété, Guro and Baoulé traditions expressed through masks, weaving, festivals and lively rural markets.
The district's best-known natural attraction is Marahoué National Park near Bouaflé, while the confluence of the Bandama and Marahoué rivers at Bozi, the rocky hills of Blablata near Bonon and the Kossou Dam and lake offer varied landscapes. Around Daloa, visitors can see the sacred monkeys of Gbétitapéa, the elephant-shaped rock of Brizeboua, an artisan centre and a small antelope park.
Cocoa, coffee, sugarcane, rice and food crops drive much of the local economy, making Sassandra-Marahoué relevant for agricultural trade and business travel as well as tourism. Daloa's airport, bus links and position on major roads make it a practical gateway to the centre-west.
For travellers, the district combines a busy provincial capital with forest, savanna and riverside scenery, traditional crafts and plantation landscapes that are rarely crowded, offering a more grounded view of everyday life in inland Côte d'Ivoire.
