About Comoé

Comoé District covers the forested east of Côte d'Ivoire, with Abengourou as its capital and largest city. Named after the Comoé River, the district stretches from the Indénié-Djuablin region in the north to the coastal Sud-Comoé region around Aboisso, blending plantation landscapes, trading towns and lagoon environments.

The area is closely tied to the Agni people and the historic Indénié kingdom. In Abengourou, visitors can see the Cour Royale de l'Indénié, the Musée Charles Bieth and the Cathédrale Sainte-Thérèse, completed in 1928, while nearby communities preserve ceremonial music, dance and craft traditions.

Cocoa, coffee, rubber, oil palm and timber have long shaped the local economy, and Abengourou remains an important commercial and administrative centre for eastern Côte d'Ivoire. Aboisso, the capital of Sud-Comoé, provides access to the Sanwi kingdom, the Aby Lagoon and the Éhotilé Islands.

Beyond agriculture, the district attracts travellers interested in cultural heritage and ecotourism. Initiatives such as the Route des Rois connect royal courts, traditional ceremonies and historic sites across the region, while forest reserves and rivers offer a quieter contrast to coastal resorts.

For visitors, Comoé District works as a practical gateway to eastern Côte d'Ivoire, about 210 km from Abidjan and close to routes toward the Ghanaian border. Business travellers in the agricultural and trade sectors, as well as leisure visitors seeking Akan royal culture and green landscapes, use Abengourou and Aboisso as convenient bases.

Comoé Travel Guide

Best Time to Visit

The dry season from November to March is the most comfortable period for exploring Comoé District, with less rain and easier road travel. Heavy rains between April and July can make rural tracks muddy, although the green landscape is at its most lush.

How to Get Around

Shared taxis, minibuses and bush taxis connect Abengourou, Aboisso and smaller towns, while motorcycle taxis are common within urban areas. A private car or chauffeur is useful for reaching plantations, royal courts and lagoon sites on a flexible schedule.

Where to Stay

Abengourou offers the widest choice of hotels and guesthouses for exploring the Indénié area, while Aboisso provides bases near the Aby Lagoon and Sud-Comoé attractions. Simple lodgings and maquis restaurants are found in most district towns.

Food & Drink

Local meals include attiéké with grilled fish, alloco, kedjenou and foutou served in maquis and restaurants. Palm wine, fresh fruit and cocoa-rich produce reflect the region's plantation economy and everyday food culture.
