About Bas-Sassandra

San-Pédro is the main port city of southwestern Ivory Coast and the seat of Bas-Sassandra District. It is the country's second-largest port and a key export gateway for cocoa, coffee, timber, palm oil and minerals, giving the city a busy, trade-driven character alongside its Atlantic coastline.

San-Pédro grew from a small fishing village of only a few dozen people before the late 1960s. The construction of a deep-water port, inaugurated in 1971, transformed it into one of West Africa's major harbour cities, with rapid growth and modern infrastructure shaping its coastal landscape.

The city's landmarks include its working port, central market and sandy Atlantic beaches. Visitors use San-Pédro as a base for the Monogaga beach and Pointe de Taki area, the Bay of Sirens at Grand-Béréby and the historic coastal town of Sassandra, which retains colonial-era buildings and a metal wharf.

San-Pédro is an important hub for logistics, shipping and agro-industry, attracting business travellers linked to the port and commodity trade. Its beaches, nearby nature and seafood-focused local cuisine also make it a starting point for exploring Ivory Coast's less-visited southwestern coast.
