About Aosta Valley

Aosta is the capital of Italy's smallest and most mountainous region, the Aosta Valley, set in the western Alps near the borders with France and Switzerland. Surrounded by Mont Blanc, the Matterhorn, Monte Rosa and the Gran Paradiso massif, the city is often called the “Rome of the Alps” because of its remarkably well-preserved Roman monuments.

Founded in 25 BC as Augusta Praetoria by the Romans, Aosta still follows the original rectangular street grid. The Arch of Augustus, the Praetorian Gate, the Roman Theatre, the Roman walls and the Roman bridge remain central to the city's identity, while medieval layers appear in the collegiate church of Sant'Orso with its cloister and the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta.

The compact historic centre is largely pedestrianised around Piazza Émile Chanoux, with cafés, shops, medieval towers and Roman remains within a short walk. The Regional Archaeological Museum and the Saint-Bénin Centre showcase local history and culture, while castles such as Fénis, Issogne and the Bard Fortress lie within easy reach in the surrounding valley.

Aosta works as a year-round Alpine base: in winter it gives access to the Pila ski area linked by cable car, with Courmayeur and Cervinia further up the valley, and in summer it opens onto hiking, cycling and Gran Paradiso National Park. Its food scene centres on fontina cheese, polenta, hearty stews and local Valle d'Aosta wines, and the January Fiera di Sant'Orso crafts fair is a long-standing regional event.

For travellers, Aosta is both a destination in its own right and a practical gateway to the mountains. It combines Roman and medieval heritage with easy access to ski resorts, nature and the Mont Blanc Tunnel, while Turin and Geneva airports provide the main international connections.
