About Hajdú-Bihar County
Debrecen is Hungary's second-largest city and the cultural, educational and economic centre of the Northern Great Plain. Located in Hajdú-Bihar County about 220 km east of Budapest, it combines a historic core with a large university, research institutions and fast-growing industrial parks.
Known as the 'Calvinist Rome', Debrecen has long been a centre of Hungarian Protestantism and was briefly the seat of Hungary's government during the 1848–49 revolution. Its landmark Reformed Great Church on Kossuth Square, the Déri Museum and the modernist MODEM art centre reflect the city's layered history and cultural life.
Neighbourhoods range from the central streets around Kossuth Square and Piac utca to the leafy Nagyerdő district, home to the University of Debrecen, Aquaticum spa and the Great Forest park. The Flower Carnival held each August is the city's best-known annual event, drawing visitors from across Hungary and beyond.
Debrecen is also an important business and logistics hub in eastern Hungary, with growing automotive, pharmaceutical and service sectors and an expanding industrial base. Its university and international student community add a lively café, dining and nightlife scene.
Whether travelling for study, business, spa holidays or cultural events, Debrecen offers a practical and distinctive base for exploring the Great Plain and nearby Hortobágy National Park.
