About Francisco Morazán
Tegucigalpa is the capital of Honduras and the heart of the Francisco Morazán department, set in a mountain valley at roughly 1,000 metres above sea level. Together with its twin city Comayagüela, it forms the Central District, a busy administrative and commercial centre surrounded by forested hills.
Its colonial core is built around Parque Central and landmarks such as the San Miguel Arcángel Cathedral, while the Basílica de Nuestra Señora de Suyapa honours the country's patron saint and draws pilgrims each February. Museums like the Museum for National Identity explain Honduran history, and the El Picacho viewpoint offers sweeping views of the city.
Neighbourhoods vary from the historic centre and the markets of Comayagüela to the restaurants, hotels and offices of Colonia Palmira, Lomas del Guijarro and Miraflores. Just outside the city, La Tigra National Park provides cloud-forest trails, while the colonial villages of Santa Lucía and Valle de Ángeles are popular day trips.
As the seat of government and many embassies, Tegucigalpa is Honduras's main political and financial hub, with conferences, business meetings and university life shaping much of its activity. Street food such as baleadas and anafres, markets, cafés and a modest but growing nightlife scene reflect everyday local culture.
For leisure travellers, the city offers history, museums, mountain scenery and easy access to nearby towns; for business visitors, it is the country's principal destination for government, finance and international organisations.
